Loss on drying: ≤ 1.0%
Physicochemical properties: white or off white crystalline powder. Galactose is oxidized by nitric acid to form galactosic acid, which is usually called mucus acid. Solubility in water: 3 g/l (14 ℃), solubility in 1n NaOH: 4%. Insoluble in alcohol and ether. Mucus acid has low solubility and precipitates crystals in water. Therefore, D-galactose and nitric acid are often used to check the existence of galactose or lactose. Mucinous acid is an racemate with no optical activity
